Raven's Omen Writing Contest (August 9th - August 23rd)

Note: This contest is closed now. View the final winners here!

Hey there! How many of you reading this are aspiring authors? Do you consider yourself one? Maybe you do, or maybe you're just someone who enjoys writing up a story here and there. Or, heck, maybe you're already a published author.

All of those are great, and no matter how serious you are about the craft, how experienced you are, I'd love to see what you have going on. Whether your more of the storyteller kind or your heart lies with poetry, how about giving us a taste of your talent?

The theme of this contest is called Raven's Omen. You'll be given a prompt, consisting of both words and an image, and your goal is to create a memorable piece based upon that prompt in the form of either a poem or a short story. Two contestants will be chosen as winners - one for each form. Anyone is welcome to enter, so don't be shy!

Below are the contest guidelines. Show me what you've got!
The Raven's Omen
Writing Contest
Prompt:
"Dunkelheit" by Vickie666 on DeviantArt
The raven lifts his head, sensing impending trouble. He takes off from his post above the dark, abandoned tower; a message of warning upon his wings.

General Guidelines

  • Create a story based upon the prompt.
  • Decide which category you want to enter into: Poem or short story.
  • Short stories should be between 100 and 1000 words in length. Poems should be between 5 and 15 lines long.
    • If you don't know how to check how many words your piece has, copy and paste your work into Microsoft Word or a similar program. They can tell you your word count!
  • You must enter by August 23rd, 2015. No entries will be accepted after this date.

How to Enter

There are two ways that you can enter into this contest:

  • Creating a post on your blog or website and sending me the link.

If you choose to create a blog post...

Please remember to send me the link so that I can add your entry (very important!). Make sure to include the prompt, which category you wish to enter into, and your written work.

If you choose to use email...

You must include details such as the category you wish to enter into, the name you'd like me to use to identify you, and your written work (either as an attachment or written directly in the email itself).

Other Details

- Contest Dates -
This contest runs from Sunday, August 9th and until Sunday, August 23rd. Entries will stop being accepted on the 23rd, but the winners won't be announced until a day or two after that.

- Rewards -
This is just a fun little thing to do, and as such there are no major prizes to be won. Aside from bragging rights, the two contest winners (one per category) will each receive a customized award image to display wherever they wish.

Winners can pick from two options: a surprise custom image, where I will create the design and surprise you, or a tailored image, which you will sort of collaborate with me on to create.

- Tips -
Make sure to proofread your piece before submitting it! Even the best of authors make grammatical errors, but few to no typos shows that you've put effort into making your work the best that it can be!

Be creative. It's okay if you're piece turns out a little cliche - I've given you a fairly cliche prompt. But that doesn't mean you can't produce an amazing story.

Considering you won't be creating a novel, keep in mind that good descriptions don't necessarily need to be complicated and lengthy. With a few right words, you can evoke some great imagery!

-------------------------------

There you have it! Remember, you have until August 23rd to enter. Pick your form, decide which method you'd like to use to enter, and let the words flow!

If you're stuck, consider the following questions:

Who/what is the raven?
What is his message?
Who is he attempting to warn?

Please let me know if you have any questions! Have fun!

    1. :) You have plenty of time. And I completely understand if the inspiration never quite hits, too. Hope you manage to think up a nice story though - would love to see what you can come up with! Have a wonderful day, Seema.

    1. Yay! I'm so excited to see what you come up with. Contests can be great fun - I've never done any major ones, but have participated in a couple of little ones like this. Have you decided which form you're going to write in?

    2. No, not yet. I like either so will have to think about it.

  3. This is quite an interesting prompt, even though it might be seen as cliché, it was still fun to write a story for it.

Speaking of which: I wasn't sure if I should sent you the link to my Blog post with the story via mail or comments.
Either way is this my entry to the writing contest: [The] Raven's Omen

P.S. As I don't have a blogspot account I probably wont notice right away if you answer to this.

    1. The raven is so often used in anything related to writing these days, but I agree - I felt that it was quite a fun little prompt, and saw potential for an excellent story. Poe-esque, with any other elements the writer wanted to add. Maybe take it in an entirely different and unexpected direction. I was excited to see what others could do with it.

Checking your post out now. Thank you for your interest in the contest, and I'm glad you decided to give it a shot! Also, just for the record, either method would have worked. :) A link in the comments is perfectly fine!

      Best of luck to you.

    1. Oh of course! ^^ And I know you do! No worries if you can't find the time - I understand 100% there. However, I too hope you can manage to cook something fun up, and I'm excited to see it if you do. :)

  5. Aww, I'm a little sad I missed this, it sounded like a lot of fun. This reminds me that I should really work on my creative writing though. I've mostly been concentrating on writing posts and reading lately. Are you planning on doing more writing contests in the future?

    1. If my blog wasn't created specifically for my writing, I would be in the same boat! It can be hard to balance your time. Even just a little writing a day is better than no writing at all, though. :)

Yes, I most definitely want to do more contests like this. However, it might be a while. If you'd like, I would be happy to let you know when I'm planning my next one!

      Thanks for commenting, fatal. :)
