Poem: "Troika"

Image via natureworld.ru

Troika
By: Eve Estelle

Beneath the light of a cold winter's moon,
Hooves pound against the arctic snow;
Striking strong, the legs of three,
Painted wild and ivory -

Each heavy puff of breath expelled
In a rhythmic beat of three,
They cross the frozen lands
And ancient Baikal sea;
Silent like the night goes,
And like ghosts, a mystery.

Author's note: A couple definitions, if needed:

- "Troika" originates from Russian, and means something along the lines of "a set of three." It is also the name of the Russian version of the horse-drawn carriage, with a vehicle pulled along by three side-by-side horses.

- Lake Baikal is not actually a sea; as its name suggests, it's a lake, considered the world's oldest and deepest, and is located in south-eastern Siberia.

  1. Wow! This is such a great poem. I really love the imagery in it, and the side note you included about the words Troika and Lake Baikal really helped give it a deeper meaning!

    1. Glad to hear you found those useful! :) Sometimes it's nice to leave things to the reader to figure out, but I figured maybe the definitions would be good to have here. Thank you, Erika!

  5. Such a wintry feeling poem! Lovely, Eve. Perfect for this sticky-hot summer day. ;) And the picture you chose -- reminds me of that kid board game, Candyland. :P

    1. Yesss, exactly!! I was dying yesterday in the heat, I needed something cold lol! Hah, you know what, it kind of does. I originally aimed for a very different, more real, type of image, but after a few days of searching I still had nothing that I could use. So I went with this one. Thank you, Faith! :)
